INTRODUCTION

While Western music has often focused on structure, progression, and fullness, Japanese aesthetics value simplicity, imperfection, and silence. This talk introduces the idea of ma (間)—a key concept in Japanese aesthetics that refers to the space between things, or the meaningful silence that gives shape to sound, movement, and time. Rather than seeing silence as empty, ma teaches us to hear it as presence, as potential, as negative space.
